The Simpson Strong-Tie ABU Adjustable Post Base with Uplift is engineered to securely anchor wooden posts to existing concrete foundations in high-capacity applications.

It features a built-in 1-inch standoff that elevates the post above the concrete surface, reducing moisture-related decay at the post's end. The slotted anchor hole allows for precise post-placement adjustments during installation.

Constructed from durable steel with a ZMAX® galvanization for enhanced corrosion resistance, the ABU post base accommodates various post sizes, including 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 nominal lumber.

It is designed to be used with nails, Strong-Drive® SD Connector screws, or bolts, ensuring a robust connection that meets building code requirements for structural posts exposed to weather or water splash. This versatile post base is ideal for decks, pergolas, and other outdoor structures requiring strong uplift resistance.

Key Features

  • The slot in the base enables flexibility around the anchor bolt, making precise post placement easier
  • 1" stand-off design meets code requirements for structural posts installed in basements or exposed to weather or water splash
  • Increased uplift loads for earthquake or wind loading

Installation

  • Use all specified fasteners; see General Notes.
  • See our Anchoring, Fastening, and Restoration Systems for Concrete and Masonry catalogue for retrofit anchor options, such as Titen HD®, Stainless-Steel Titen HD, or SET-3G™.
  • Post bases do not provide adequate resistance to prevent members from rotating about the base, so they are not recommended for installations that are not top-supported (such as fences or unbraced carports).
  • Place the base, cut washer(s) or load transfer plate(s), and nut(s) on the anchor bolt(s). Adjust the post placement as needed and tighten the nut securely.
  • Place the standoff base and then the post in the ABU.
  • Fasten the post using nails or Strong-Drive SD Connector screws or bolts (ABU88Z, ABU1010Z, ABU1212Z — SDS optional).

Coating

  • G90 Zinc Galvanized: The standard zinc coating (0.90 oz/sq. ft.) offers moderate corrosion resistance and is ideal for indoor or covered outdoor applications.
  • ZMAX®: Enhanced zinc coating (~1.85 oz/sq. ft.) provides superior corrosion resistance, perfect for outdoor or high-moisture environments, especially with treated wood.od.od.

When selecting Simpson Strong-Tie post bases, it’s essential to know the difference between rough and nominal lumber:

  • Nominal Lumber: Standard milled wood with smaller actual dimensions (e.g., a 4x4 measures 3.5" x 3.5"). Most post bases are designed for nominal sizes.
  • Rough Lumber: Unsurfaced wood retaining larger dimensions (e.g., a 4x4 measures 4" x 4"). Specialized post bases or oversized options are required.

Ensure a proper fit for secure fastening and structural integrity. Simpson Strong-Tie labels their post bases for compatibility with rough or nominal lumber. Always measure your lumber before selecting a base.
