The Simpson Strong-Tie KBS1Z Knee-Brace Stabilizer is engineered to create a robust connection between knee bracing and columns or beams, enhancing the stability of freestanding structures such as decks and pergolas.

Pre-formed at a 45° angle, it accommodates 2x, 4x, and 6x lumber in post-to-beam configurations. The KBS1Z is crafted from 16-gauge steel with a ZMAX® galvanized finish, offering superior corrosion resistance for outdoor and treated wood applications.

It complies with prescriptive deck bracing requirements, including those outlined in the American Wood Council's DCA6 Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide.

Installation

  • Use all specified fasteners; see General Notes.
  • For installations other than 45°, bend KBS1Z along slots to the desired angle. Bend one time only.
  • Knee Brace:
    — Cut braces at the desired angle
    — Bend KBS1Z to the desired angle if required
    — Install fasteners to secure in place
    — For equal-width members, install (2) KBS1Z on each end of the brace (see illustration, connection type 1)
    — For 2x knee brace, install single KBS1Z on each end of brace (see illustration, connection type 2)
  • Alternate Post Cap Application:
    — Install in pairs; see illustrations for quantity and configuration
    — Part used as a column cap; does not replace a knee brace

Coating

  • G90 Zinc Galvanized: The standard zinc coating (0.90 oz/sq. ft.) offers moderate corrosion resistance and is ideal for indoor or covered outdoor applications.
  • ZMAX®: Enhanced zinc coating (~1.85 oz/sq. ft.) provides superior corrosion resistance, perfect for outdoor or high-moisture environments, especially with treated wood.od.od.
